Grape Agate is often called a form of Purple Chalcedony; however, it more appropriately fits into the Quartz category. The bubble look is due to Grape Agate being a botryoidal formation. The tiny bubbles are covered with what is called druze (small sparkly crystals). There is some discussion that Grape Agate is more accurately a botryoidal Amethyst. It can take millions of years to form Grape Agate. It forms in cavities where volcanic activity releases gas bubbles that are trapped in the cooling lava.
These clusters are found in one place, and it is a very small area. That makes Grape Agate rare and hard to find. It comes from Mamuju on the western coast of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
